Meet the Artists of the Year Judges

We’re really excited to announce our line-up of judges for this year's Artists of the Year. Our judges have been an inspiration to all throughout the years and have been great mentors to many.

This year, we see the return of judges Fraser Scarfe, Alison C. Board, Jeremy Ford, and SAA's Anita Pounder - along with newcomers, Adebanji Alade and Paint & Create editor Rachel Graham.

Fraser Scarfe

Fraser Scarfe, hailing from Lincoln, is a celebrated artist known for his mastery in oil and acrylic landscapes, rooted in his lifelong love for drawing. He made waves early in his career, winning the prestigious SAA's Artist of the Year title at just 17. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Fraser shares his passion for drawing by teaching at the esteemed Royal Drawing School, where he oversees the post-graduate 'Drawing Year' program.

In his relatively short career, Fraser has amassed notable achievements. He served as Artist in Residence at Lincoln Cathedral, exhibited in 'The Best Drawing of the Year 2012-13', and received the 'ING Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary'. His instructional book, "How to Paint Atmospheric Landscapes in Acrylic," published by Search Press in 2016, showcases his expertise. Notably, his work 'Field Near Cottingham' was shortlisted for the Haworth Award in 2015.

Since his win as Artist of the Year in 2008, Fraser remains dedicated to supporting fellow artists.

Alison C. Board

Alison C. Board, a multifaceted artist specialising in mixed media, also serves as an author, private tutor, and most recently, a lecturer at Arts University Bournemouth. Raised in the picturesque and historically rich town of Wimborne Minster, Dorset, Alison's artistic journey began in her youth, nurtured by her parents who owned an art shop. Initially self-taught, Alison formalised her artistic education in 2013, graduating with a BA (Hons) Fine Art with first-class honours. Today, she imparts her knowledge and expertise through her own classes and workshops, as well as teaching the next generation of artists at Bournemouth University.

Jeremy Ford

Jeremy Ford, a cherished member of our artistic family, brings decades of experience and boundless enthusiasm to our community. Trained in Graphic Design and Illustration, Jeremy has crafted a remarkable career as a professional artist and illustrator, with notable commissions from prestigious organizations. Beyond his artistic achievements, Jeremy is a sought-after teacher and demonstrator, leading workshops worldwide. As former President of the SAA, he continues to inspire and educate aspiring artists.

But beyond his impressive resume, Jeremy is just like us – he has a soft spot for chocolate biscuits. So, next time you see him, be sure to offer him a sweet treat and strike up a conversation about art, life, or anything in between!

Anita Pounder

Anita is a familiar face among SAA members, known for her inspiring tutorials, Tried & Tested column in Paint & Create magazine, and contributions to the SAA YouTube channel. As the SAA's In-House Artist, she boasts unparalleled product knowledge, mastering nearly every item offered. Anita's artistic versatility shines as she employs various mediums, particularly enjoying the expressive freedom of line and wash techniques, especially when depicting animals, birds, and flowers.

Anita will lead the judging panel for the Artists of the Year competition, commencing on 13th May. Collaborating with fellow SAA team members and partner artists, she will oversee the initial rounds of judging, ensuring a fair and discerning selection process.

Anita feels it is a great honour to judge the AOY competition where she’s constantly awed by the high standards and amazing creative talent that is out there.

Guest judge Adebanji Alade

Joining the judging panel for the first time this year is president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, artist and author of Painting People and Places and The Addictive Sketcher, Adebanji Alade.

Adebanji is looking for originality, something special, something that stops and makes him ask questions. 'It’s all about obeying all the rules of design but still making it uniquely yours!'

Guest Judge Rachel Graham

You'll be familiar with our Paint & Create editor Rachel who shares her family stories and love of art in her editor's letter. Rachel has a keen eye for all things creative, from painting to creating and everything in between. She loves to see what you have all been up to as SAA members and hand-picks all of the paintings that are shared in the Members' Gallery features.
