Question:

Can the opaque gesso be watered down so that it is semi opaque?

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Gesso is a water-based primer and can be diluted with water where necessary.

The consistency and texture of gesso will vary from brand to brand. Some are more liquid, and others are thicker. Some apply more smoothly, and others leave a more textured, toothy surface. Gesso is also available as a spray.

Thinning gesso with water will make the layer smoother.

Over thinning can make some brands of gesso more brittle and prone to cracking as the water dilutes the elasticity of the paint.

As with acrylic paint it is not recommended to thin more than 50% as the paint will loose its adhesive properties on some surfaces.
