    Thank you for your enquiry

The Term NOT refers to the surface of a watercolour paper. There are three traditional surfaces for watercolour paper, Rough, Not and Hot Pressed.

HP (Hot Pressed) – This paper is quite smooth and is extremely popular with botanical, and portrait artists who produce fine detailed work. The smooth surface is achieved by running the paper through hot rollers during the making process.

CP (Cold Pressed) – Also known as 'NOT' – This paper is a very popular medium textured watercolour paper suitable for the majority of styles of works. This surface is also known as NOT and refers to the paper not having a Hot Pressed or Rough Surface. It is produced in a similar way to Hot pressed watercolour paper but this time the rollers are not heated ensuring the paper does not lose all the texture.

Rough – The surface is very textured, with lots of natural peaks and troughs for the watercolour pigment to collect in. Rough paper is fantastic for landscapes and seascapes where the rugged nature of the surface enhances the composition on the painting. The Rough surface is not always easily distinguished by looking the paper and the texture can only be noticed when the paint is applied.
