    Internationally acclaimed artist and tutor Carole Baker RBSA, invites you to paint with her from her studio-gallery in Shropshire.

    A Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Carole regularly exhibits there and in gallery shows, open exhibitions and art fairs throughout the UK. Her work has been featured in International Artist and The Artist magazines and is held in private collections worldwide. Inspired by the landscape, bold, vibrant colour and texture fascinate her and she strives to create exciting and evocative paintings. She paints in acrylics, watercolour and mixed media.

    Carole teaches from her purpose-built studio-gallery overlooking rolling Shropshire countryside, where her reputation for providing challenging, informative and experimental workshops is ever growing. Through thoughtful planning she aims to provide a relaxed and informal atmosphere for small groups of up to 6 people. She has been providing workshops and painting holidays for over 13 years, passing on her knowledge, enthusiasm and encouragement to students from all over the UK and abroad. The studio provides excellent inspiration giving an overall intimate and memorable experience.

    Carole's workshops are aimed at people who want to 'loosen up' and be freer. Carole paints in such a way as to draw the viewer in, to let them decipher certain elements, and therefore, lots of detail need not be labored over.... just a suggestion of what is there is often all that is needed, making the finished work more exciting, evocative and bold. 

    Students are encouraged to paint from their own inspiration ? sketches or photo?s they have made. They are encouraged to experiment and plan their work to ensure a strong composition and colour/mark making harmony.
    The 2018 programme incorporates workshops in watercolour, mixed media and acrylic. Most workshops are suitable for all abilities.

    BOOKING CONDITIONS
    If there are not a viable number of students, workshops may be cancelled and payment returned. Should you cancel, a refund will be given less 50% of the course fee. It is regretted that no refund can be made in respect of bookings cancelled 30 days (or less) prior to the date of the workshop. If you cancel a workshop and we are able to fill your place, we will charge a handling fee of £20 and hold the remaining fee in credit to be used for a later booking. If we are unable to fill your place, the fee is not refundable. The booking is non transferable.

    This workshop will focus on the unique challenges of plein air painting. The ability to see and simplify, to organise the subject matter, and to present it in a simple and straightforward manner. The workshop will include demonstrations as well as individual attention. You will need to be fairly active and mobile.
    Painting plein air in watercolour + ink/pastel - gathering source material in the form of sketches and photographs for future use, understanding the importance of painting from life.

    LANDSCAPE ABSTRACTIONS
    2-day Thursday 6 ? Friday 7 December 2018
    The landscape will be the framework that you will build on to move into abstraction. Some people paint abstracts entirely from their imaginations, but having something ?real? as the starting point gives a direction to start working in, to kick start your imagination. We will work on some techniques in acrylics on Day 1 and begin working on a ?design? for our finished work. Whether you are already working in landscape and want a little more edge to your work or are trying to find an approach to abstraction, this workshop should help you.

    Concentrating on the use of colour first and foremost ? Using a limited and expressive colour palette, exploring a range of colour combinations using a loose and free approach to create a considered painting in acrylics.

    This workshop is about putting your interpretation on the subject by painting on a coloured ground and working in many thin layers, ?scumbling? the paint.     NEW PAINTING WITHOUT A BRUSH IN MIXED MEDIA

    The aim of this workshop is to encourage you to break away from the conventional approach to painting and explore ?alternative? methods of picture making. Drawing and painting with mountboard, rollering, spattering and palette knife painting. A creative and liberating experience!

    Create texture in your painting to add heaps of interest... incorporating collage from the outset and layering paint to create the desired effect. Experimental and energizing with results that will hold the viewers attention for longer. 
The 2-day workshop will give you time to develop compositional planning and ideas, analyse mark making and finishing off a painting. Painting for your own inspiration. 


    SECRETS TO PAINTING LOOSE IN WATERCOLOURS

    This workshop will encourage you to stop fiddling and loosen up your watercolour landscapes! A series of stimulating demonstrations and exercises in composition, the expressive use of colour, pigment application and dynamic ways of applying paint, all designed to encourage well-planned yet spontaneous watercolour paintings.

    Concentrating on the subject of stormy and dramatic skies and reflections, we will consider colour mixing and layering to create glowing and luminous results!

    We will set out with the clear intention of incorporating texture into our work - texture/modeling paste, tissue paper, sand - anything to give another dimension to our work and exciting, expressive results!

    NEW TREES IN THE LANDSCAPE IN WATER MEDIA

    We will be tackling trees in the landscape, analyzing shapes, colours to create distance and perspective, getting away from painting actual trees but mark making. Experimenting in watercolour techniques and acrylics with many demo?s and hands-on painting.


    WATERCOLOUR PLUS & INTERESTING FOREGROUNDS

    Very often tangled brambles, a busy hedgerow or a complicated foreground generally, can deter you from picking up your paintbrush! This workshop concentrates on turning such subject matter into an interesting foreground, almost making it the focal point with lots of interest. Create movement and energy in a painting by incorporating soft pastel, oil pastel, ink and/or texture with a semi-abstract approach.
