Sculpture: an exploration

Tuition FROM: Monday, 23 January 2017 TO: Friday, 27 January 2017

Tuition Type: Painting Holiday

  • Description
he course is a multi-dimensional introduction to some of the materials and methods of sculpture. All levels welcome.
The natural environment at Moorbath is a wonderful context in which to consider materials and to investigate form. Here, one is surrounded by both in abundance. The intention is to elicit personal responses and to develop individual understanding, as a foundation for your making.
Human presence is a starting point for conceptualising the 3D object in space. To this end the group will engage physically in the landscape - walking, dancing, resting, - and observe mass, scale, relationship, contour and weight.
Our attention will then turn to the architecturally challenging and symbolically rich presence of the horse, using Moorbath Farm's stable. Representation is not the desired outcome. Revelation and realisation is.
? You will draw as a means of seizing the skeleton of an idea, subsequently to be fleshed out in clay or plaster.
? You will investigate a range of materials, familiarise yourself with their properties and begin to open a personal dialogue with them.
? You will develop your own sculptural language, working to music to encourage fluidity, rhythm and speed.
? You will be introduced to the foundation techniques of direct clay modelling, armature building, assemblage, relief, simple plaster mould-making and casting.
? You will end the course with a subjective grasp of what it is to sculpt and a number of small works testifying to your creative journey.
