Where did the idea for Mars Bar come from?
I wanted to paint something that didn't tax me too much and that was fresh, something my wife would want to hang on the wall - truthfully she was a bit fed up with having a house full of aircraft, cars and ships. So I did Mars Bar about four weeks ago, as a bit of fun.

It was inspired by a book of Jack Vettriano paintings; I love the way he paints, and the skin tones he achieves with so few colours.

What generally inspires you to paint?

I get ideas from seeing the works of other artists, from lyrics in music, from museums, sitting in restaurants people-watching, the TV and the Internet (which is great for researching a difficult subject) - everywhere really.

I am excited by so much that I see, and am constantly editing things in my mind to form future works, sometimes actually getting around to putting ideas into my sketch books.

Have you always used acrylics?
I took them up seriously three years ago, before that I had only used them for murals in my children's bedrooms.

I was converted at a demonstration by another SAA Professional Artist, and now they have won me over because of the ease of use, the colours and the speed of drying. I used to paint in gouache because of the fine detail it allowed me to paint in pictures of cars and aircraft. I detest watercolour with a vengeance, though I do admire those who can use it well.

How and where do you work best?
I largely paint from photographs, and in the case of aircraft, cars and ships I also use detailed plans and elevations. I once tried painting outside, but the bugs got on my nerves so much, that now I work in the conservatory or my own studio.

On occasion I have painted from memory, but as you get older, the memory fades or becomes distorted, so here my own photos play a big part.

 

How does it feel to sell a painting?
It's always a bit of a wrench, because I do put love into my work, whatever I paint. Back in the 1970s I remember feeling really lost when I sold the only painting that I was truly happy with, and not long after that I had a ten year break from painting.

During that time I came to understand why Van Gogh cut off his own ear – although I still have both mine. When I have exhibited in the past, I have watched the reaction of others from afar, and it gives a warm feeling of pleasure when you see or hear that someone likes your work.

How important is it to mix with other artists?
I've been a member of the SAA for a couple of years now. It’s brilliant for bringing artists together, allowing them to show their works in a fair manner with no preference to known artists. I run an art group in the village on Mondays, and am a member of another in nearby March on Thursdays. Being a member of such groups is very humbling, but also a great source of inspiration from like-minded people.

How do you balance teaching, commissions and painting for pleasure?
I teach at my local art group and we have just had our first exhibition, which was a success, so I guess I have managed to pass on something to someone. I try to make it as fun as possible – I’ve found you don't learn from anyone who is too serious. I teach every week unless I'm on holiday, and paint for myself most days, unless a commission comes in, then that takes precedence. A commission is always a challenge, whether it’s a baby portrait or battleship. Currently I am working on a Bosnian scene, which has involved quite a bit of research.
