  • Description/Summary
Get ready to sharpen your pencils and hone your sketching skills with Malcolm Cudmore's speedy challenge! "The photo I've submitted this time shows a working horse whose day job is hauling logs with a forestry company. I photographed it between demonstrations at a local open day. Display the picture on a monitor or print and mount it vertically so that you can imagine you are looking at the real thing. Give yourself a maximum of 15 minutes for the sketch. Things to note include: how much horse is in front of the front feet and how much is behind. Look for big, simple shapes before looking for details. These working horses have deep chests and sturdy necks. Note how close together the rear legs are - despite the massive, muscular hind quarters. You probably won't want to worry with all the unnecessary detail in the background. Instead, it would be good to find a way to hint at the grass that is both carpet and lunch."
