2018 is the Chinese Year of the Dog, so we've set you a canine challenge for the next 12 months! We look forward to seeing you put your artistic skills to the test, getting to grips with fur, paws, wet noses and waggy tails!
One of the most important factors is the pose. You need to make sure that you’re painting your dog from the best position, and to do that it’s helpful to take a lot of photos from different angles. A plain background can make it easier to see all of the animal’s features.
Light is also important: a good light source will give definition and separate areas of light and shadow. A good light source will emphasise the variation in fur colour and texture.

E-mail entries, are only open to SAA members and are acceptable in JPEG format no larger than 3MB per image. With only one picture per email. Please email to [email protected] and remember to include the competition name in the Subject.
For postal entries, please supply all the information listed below and send your entries to PO Box 50, Newark, Notts, NG23 5GY marked “Dog Day Challenge “.
Entries must be your own work; if you have used another artists' painting, tuition or photograph as your inspiration, please ensure you have gained the appropriate authorisation to publish the image and be sure to credit them accordingly - for example 'after a painting by ....' or 'from a photograph of ....'.
