  10. Creative Freedom Book with Maggie Price

Creative Freedom Book with Maggie Price

    RRP £17.99
    SAA Price £8.99

We all get stuck with creative block from time to time and this handy guide will help kick-start your artistic juices.

Presenting a series of over fifty ideas that will help you look at your subjects in a new way, Maggie will help you find your inspiration again and maybe even send you off in a completely new direction.

Some of the ideas are obvious, such as Paint In A New Location or Change Your Viewpoint & Medium, but others are less so. Working Backward, for example, shows you how switching from pastels, where colours are applied dark to light, to watercolour, where it's the other way round, can force you to think about the subject in a completely new way and see the values differently.

Paint Vegetables and Sketch Your Surroundings are both about working with things that are so familiar they're usually overlooked. Once again, it's about looking and seeing and then thinking in a new way.

Most of the ideas presented are as simple as this, but they are presented in an imaginative and practical way that can't but have you itching to have a go yourself.

Each topic is accompanied by a step-by-step demonstration by one of over twenty artists, giving a practical and varied approach.

  11. Life Drawing Book with Eddie Armer

Life Drawing Book with Eddie Armer

    RRP £12.99
    SAA Price £9.99

It hardly seems possible that this 96 page book can contain such a variety of techniques, styles, exercises and examples!

In the introduction, Eddie tells us that, "Results may be loose and spontaneous, tight and considered or maybe abstracted, depending on the day, my mood and the model!" and this is certainly the case here.

Such variety inevitably means that each section is covered very quickly, but it also means that it's not laboured. As this is a Masterclass, this is something to be celebrated, and experienced readers will find that there is so much visual stimulation that it's impossible not to be inspired at virtually every turn.

Eddie works in pencil, ballpoint, wax crayon and charcoal and in both fine lines and blocks of tone to create images that capture the character and shape of the sitter in as few strokes as possible.

The biographical notes tell us that Eddie is also a musician, and there is a lyrical quality to his work that perhaps originates here

  12. Ready to Paint Tulips in Watercolour Book with Fiona Peart

Ready to Paint Tulips in Watercolour Book with Fiona Peart

    RRP £8.99
    SAA Price £6.99

By concentrating on a single flower type, Fiona Peart rather cleverly sidesteps the problems of dealing with what can be a bewildering variety of forms. Instead, she is able to concentrate on the colours and shapes that Charles Reid said are the real basis of flower painting.

In the five demonstrations that make up the book, Fiona shows you blooms in a range of contexts from single varieties to colour and group studies. However, as well as demonstrating composition and representation, Fiona will also show you how to use washes, shading and granulation to great effect in both foregrounds and backgrounds.
As an introduction to flower painting, the single-type approach has much to recommend it. However, Fiona also offers what turns out to be a great deal of technical advice that has wider application, making this a worthwhile investment for any artist.
