Could I use it outdoors for drawing landscapes or features such as trees, buildings or bridges?
The Camera Lucida is the ideal tool to enable you to draw a still life without taking your eyes off your paper. Ideal for use with an easel, it uses mirrors to superimpose an optical image of the subject onto the paper allowing the artist to sketch the key points, aiding in dimensions and perspective.
It is a simple unit using mirrors and light.
For the best effects good strong lighting on the subject helps makes a clearer superimposed image on the paper, which will appear like a ghost image on the paper.
You can use in a landscape it works best in a good light giving stronger contrasts. I have tried this outside and have found that you can get a fairly good image some fine detail is lost but you can get correct proportions and positioning of objects.
Can you use it for copying a photograph? If you point the camera at a photograph rather than a still life?
Thank you for your enquiry,
The Camera Lucida designed to help you draw still life. Using mirrors, a ghost image in projected onto your paper helping you to sketch down what you see. Good light helps to enhance the subject and make it easier to see when copying the ghost image.
It is not suitable to copy form photographs as you may not be able to get enough detail.
