  1. Painting Pastel Landscapes Book with Jeremy Ford

Painting Pastel Landscapes Book with Jeremy Ford

    RRP £14.99
    SAA Price £9.74

Jeremy Ford is a very patient, generous and thorough teacher. The fact that he also clearly enjoys what he's doing helps as well. I mention this because this is a very nicely crafted and balanced course that will appeal to the beginner as well as the more practised exponent of painting with pastels.

Demonstrations are at its heart (and, as I hinted, it has a big heart) and they ensure that, at all times, you're learning by doing and not by reading or by rote. Yes, of course there are sections on materials, mark-making and methods of application, but they're short and to the point. They're also fully illustrated, so you're never in doubt as to what you're supposed to be doing.

All the landscape elements are here and we have skies and clouds, trees, water, hills and structures. Seasons include both winter and summer, and lighting varies from soft daylight to dramatic sunsets. Neither does Jeremy forget to include advice on perspective, reflections and painting from photographs.

The Encyclopedia of Pastel Techniques with Judy Martin - Delivered directly from publisher - UK Mainland Delivery Only

    SAA Price £12.99

A new, up-to-date edition of the popular and comprehensive encyclopedia by professional artist Judy Martin.

Many manuals on pastel painting take for granted the use of traditional soft pastels, a dry medium that provides the richness and variety of paint colours. Soft pastel is certainly the most versatile and widely used, but the modern range of materials include other pastel types that have their own specific purpose.

In this exhaustive A- Z reference for artists of all skills, a variety of different pastel types are detailed, from oil through to water-soluble pastels, amongst the multitude of techniques broken down and easily explained.

The book itself is divided into two sections: the first provides step-by-step demonstrations that guide artists through a variety of techniques, from basic colour mixing through to creating special effects such as sgraffito and sfumato. The second part focuses on themes, illustrating how individual artists tackle a number of subjects, including natural landscapes, urban scenes, figures, animals and still life.

This resource provides a wealth of stimulating ideas to help artists both amateurs and veterans develop their own pastel style.
