There is a sand bar of rocks and coral rubble about a quarter of a mile off the south coast of Jamaica, where the Pelicans perch for a rest, between fishing bouts. There is actually a little ramshackle bar, built over the water, there. As one approaches, in a small engine-powered canoe, the breeze whips the foam off the waves. All is dazzling glare, shimmering sea-spray and glimpses of the birds, just as silhouettes against the brilliance of breakers, which constantly roll in, across the sand bank. In order to capture the atmosphere, I used sweeping gestural strokes of acrylic applied generously, with a palette knife. I had used some gesso as an underpainting to create texture, particularly in the sea foam. The water closer to the boat, reveals patches of mustard-coloured coral, glimpsed beneath the surface. I employed some subtle use of complementary colours (violet and yellow) to make the foam seem as if it is shimmering in the strong sunshine.
