I have chosen this drawing from my own photo for this competition because it fits in with the Spring season which starts here on the Hebrides with the lambing and the beautiful daffodils, after the long hard and rough Winter of great winds and plenty of rain. To draw this image, I read the story of Henry Moore's Sheep Sketchbook. I was totally inspired by his squiggles and curly way of drawing the fur with contours of the form and tonal shadows, in the way they developed from drawing from life from the sheep to lambs then through to them being sheared. He drew them from life outside from his studio, opposite a field he let to a local farmer. He also made small plaster maquettes. I have always been inspired by his sculptures as well as his working drawings. I learned much from his style and loved it too, so I have put a sketchbook together of sheep and lambs using my own photos, drawing in his technique. I used sepia ink Pitt pens to loosen up and draw the squiggles and contours of the bodies. I added sepia acrylic inks and washes of white gouche paint for the background of tufty grass. I left the sheep forms with ink pen only to stand out.
