This year our Challenge should give you plenty of scope for interpretation. We would like you to get to grips with metallic surfaces; any sort of metal will do - bronze, copper, gold, pewter or silver - whichever you choose we want you to put some shine into a still life!
Artists often shy away from painting metallic objects because they think it's difficult to properly convey a sense of their colour and lustre. But whatever medium you use and subject matter you choose, there are ways in which you can learn to evaluate the colours of what you're painting and show how the light reflects off them.
So first choose your subject matter - a copper kettle, a gold watch, a pewter tankard, a silver jewellery box - then get to work!
Once you've had a go at this year's Challenge, do write and let us know how you got on, we'd love to see your finished work on the website - go to www.saa.co.uk and click on competitions and then SAA Challenge 2014. And don't forget to tell us what your enjoyed about taking part, how successful you feel you've been and what else this will encourage you to tackle. And while you're there, don't forget to look at what other SAA members have done and comment on their efforts too!
