Once your first layer of wash is dry you can then apply your next layer. If you don't allow the first layer to dry your next layer may well bleed into your base layer, or you could pick up your base layer colour with you brush creating blotchy patches. Place crimson as your next colour very finely using a drybrush technique. This is a dry brush with very small amount of paint on the bristles. To ensure you have the correct amount of paint on your brush, rub out on kitchen roll or scrap paper. Use a flat headed hog brush (used in oil painting) scrubbing in a circular motion around the form of the tomato. Starting from the outer edges inward toward the highlighted areas. Do not fill in your highlighted areas, it's easy to get carried away! As you move into the highlighted areas lift the pressure off the tip of your brush, this is so it gradually blends away into your base colour. It should look as if it's been airbrushed. Mastering this technique takes a time, so please don't give up, keep practicing your blending. Remember pressure on the brush to create dense colour, pressure off to blend colour away.
