Star of the silent film era, Clara Bow personified the "Roaring Twenties", becoming world famous as the 'IT' girl from the film of the same name, and is described as its leading sex symbol. However, this accolade did not come easy to Clara.
She rose from a background of poverty determined to become successful in motion pictures. However, Clara was considered socially undesirable and was shunned by the Hollywood elite for her bohemian lifestyle, thick Brooklyn accent and 'dreadful manners'.
Paradoxically, she was praised by critics for her beauty, vitality and enthusiasm. Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount, said "She danced even when her feet weren't moving. Some part of her was always in motion, if only her great, rolling eyes. It was an elemental magnetism, an animal vitality, that made her the center of attraction in any company."
Clara Bow proved anything could be achieved no matter where you start in life - she paved her own road to success with hard work, determination, the desire to succeed and the courage of her convictions - despite an abusive and loveless childhood. |
