A long lost sight once common on the rural railway was the push and pull train where when the train reached its destination the driver went to a compartment at the rear of the train where there was a set of controls to drive it back to its starting station. This saved shunting the engine around to the other end and saved time, the fireman stayed on the engine footplate to tend the fire.
