| After telling my niece I had taken up painting, and showing her the Avocet I painted from Paint's Try Your Hand at... exercise, she asked me to paint her dogs, Diesel & Ruby. Although I had never painted a pet portrait before, I agreed to have a go, so she emailed her photo to me. I used Interactive Acrylics and painted it over 4 weekends in about 4-5 hour sessions. I really didn't know how to approach it, so blocked in the main shading and then added hair texture on top. The main challenge was in painting the paw. I found I wanted to paint what I thought I saw but it didn't work, so I overpainted it by following the photo, just painting the shapes and colours I could see, toe by toe, and trying to ignore the overall paw, and I am amazed that this worked. It was a fascinating exercise and I learnt a lot. |
