Hi,
Im currently working on animal and people portraits in pencil on A4 paper, hoping to move into mixed mediums and acrylics very soon, could anyone possibly tell me the best way to get my work into exhibits as a kind of foot in the door. I have done many dog/people portraits via request and have alot of very positive feedback, just dont want to keep my work limited to facebook. All info and advice appreciated.
Many thanks

Hello Cat, I've returned to art after a long break, having lost all my confidence whilst being a carer. Whilst walking the dog I happened to meet someone who encouraged me to get back into painting again. Once I started I couldn't stop and needed somewhere to show my work (I used to sell my work very successfully before). I started out using pastels (never tried before) and got commissioned for three pastel dog/cat portraits by friends. Then I joined a local art club who have two main exhibitions a year, plus a couple of small exhibitions at local fairs, and immediately began to sell my paintings. I have also managed to sell loads of greetings cards with my artwork on through the art club and work. Amazon do suitable cards plus the cellophane covers and I print out my pictures just using my inkjet on best quality. If you are good with animal portraits I'd suggest trying local pet shops to see if they are willing to sell your greetings cards for a small commission or they might let you advertise your work for a small fee if you get to know the owners. I live near you at Little Chalfont and our local pet shop sells artists greetings cards as a sideline. Also try a place called Obsidian Art near Wendover with some samples of your work - they are always looking for new talent and they too sell greetings cards. Also try to see if your local council has any craft fairs on at the village hall etc - the cost of a stand won't be that much, and it gets you commission work too. Above all - good luck!
