Dear All,
I would like to set out in the world of watercolour demonstration, and would be extremely grateful if anyone could help with general advice. In particular could anyone shed some light on the following:

1. How to begin: Should I contact Art clubs with examples of my work?
2. Should I offer to charge nothing on a first visit, or expenses only?
3. How much do artists generally charge when they are new to it and don't have a 'name' for themselves in the field?
4. Is there much work around of this type in relation to the number of artists competing for it? - Is it often booked up a year or more in advance?

Background info: I am an experienced watercolour painter (of 20 years), have exhibited a fair bit and sold fairly successfully, but always had a full-time job. Would now like to try spending more of my 'work' time (and hopefully make more of my money!) from my painting. I do have some teaching experience, in secondary schools.

Hi Jeremy! I've been painting for a few years, and am currently listed in the SAA Tuition tab. I've been running Demonstrations and Workshops for quite a while now, so I pass on a few basics, which are my thoughts alone;
Which part of the country are you in?
I was "discovered" by a Professional Artist who said that I should be doing Demonstrations, so thats one way to get started.
In my experience, once you get started, word of mouth is important, so think about your style of tutoring - make it fun!
Most Demonstrations, though not all, are around 2 hours, so you have to produce a painting, either by demonstration - easier - or by Workshop - more time consuming, as you are going around the members / students and helping them and above all; inspiring them and encouraging them - you have to be positive so that your students are encouraged.
If you have a local Art Group, then offer your services, and ask them what they would normally pay a Demonstrator.
