I think 'coming to the point' is better than 'beating around the bush'.

So with that in mind I am posting here to find a Paint Pal who would car-share with me to get to some of the wonderful workshops we have here in Hampshire. I miss all those that are not on easy bus routes, or are too far away for me to get to.
I am pleasant company, and very willing to share the petrol expense etc.

Yes, I have joined Members Near Me. I think I selected about 6 near me and got one result. I replied immediately but never heard from the respondent again. I checked the letter I'd sent, to make sure I hadn't said anything untoward to offend, and in doing so found I'd written a very nice friendly letter. So no problem my end!!

Since this happened to me it has got me thinking that maybe you should tell members of MNE that if they change their mind about being in contact with another member it would be polite to let them know. As for me, I am still mystified as to why I never heard from the lady again????
