copyright and selling or exhibiting pictures that you have painted.

There seems to be some confusion over this area. The simple rules are that for images, photographs, paintings or pictures in magazines of any sort that are still copyright (the originator is alive or died less than 70 years ago) you can copy them for practice and exercises but you should not offer them for sale or exhibition or competitions. If you show them to others then you should always credit the creator.

The SAA will not knowingly exhibit or print or allow entry into its competitions any painting that is not original to the entrant and the entrant will be asked to declare that it is their own original work and not a copy of any other work.

I hope this helps
happy painting

Can you clarify a point for me. I sometimes use a photograph for reference, say for a pastel portrait picture of a celebrity, but then use an obvious hatched style, which is not an exact photographic reproduction. Is this still classed as a copy?

John, should that read "the originator is alive or died less than 70 years ago".

Cathy, that's a good question. I'd have liked to have seem a reply answer.
I would guess that if the creation is fairly well removed from looking like a photo realistic interpretation of the original then, you've created something new.

Hi John,

I am a new member feeling my way around all the aspects of the SAA, saw your clarification on
copyright rules. Just a quick question, you site Magazine images as a no-no but does this also include newspaper images. My reason for asking is that my daughter and some friends were pictured in a Norfolk Broads Sailing regatta and I painted a watercolour of this event. Not that I would want to sell it but your comments made me think about this aspect of copyright. Regards Phyllis
