Is there any rule of thumb on whether it is best to varnish oil paintings or leave the natural finish of the oils. I am worried that varnish may change the feel of the piece (i.e. the way light plays on the surface). Also I am quite scared that I may make a mess of the varnishing process and ruin the artwork because I had a bad experience varnishing a wardrobe door. Are there any tips?
