Ray Campbell Smith replies: Most quality watercolour papers or Imperial sheet size papers are embossed or watermarked (or both) with the name in one corner and the 'right' side is that from which the name is readable. Having said that, both sides of good quality paper are equally useable but, as the surface textures differ, it is a matter of personal choice which side is used. I generally prefer the grain on the 'right' side is obvious from the format. It sounds to me as though your Bockingford paper had been inadequately sized in manufacture and I would certainly return it with a sample showing the 'blotting paper' effect. On the few occasions in have had to return faulty batches of watercolour paper, the response has been prompt, appreciative - and generous!
