Why are watercolours usually mounted before being framed, whereas oils are not?

David Bellamy replies: Watercolours left without a mount are not so appealing. While most oil paintings have a powerful intensity in general and therefore work well without them, a watercolour does need to be set off with an attractive mount. This is especially the case with more delicate colours and small paintings.
