Hi Alan. If you were using traditional oils I understand the phrase means that when you do your original layer (using turps or white spirit as a medium), that is the "lean". As your work progresses with additional layers you reduce the medium until you are using paint with a higher oil content and evetually addd linseed oil if you wish to make it flow more easily. I imagine with water mixable oils the same applies, with using less water. You do not need much anyway and you can use water mixable linseed oil to finish off if you wish. I found Michael Sanders book on thbe subject of water mixable oils quite helpful. Hope this helps. Cherry
