I am looking for some advice regarding adding texture to canvas. I am producing some very large contemporary abstract canvas' and want to add quite rough heavy textured areas to parts of them. I am using acrylics but because of the size of the canvas I do not want to simply thicken the paint as I would do with a smaller canvas. Can anyone advise as to what materials I can use? I have been told that normal builders plaster would do the job but have no experience with this. Any advice appreciated, thanks.

try GERSTAECKER modeling paste (fine, coarse or light). it's ready to use and relatively quick drying. suitable for acrylics and oil glazing. sticks almost to anysurface. e-mail: welcome@greatart.co.uk or phone: 0845 601 5772 good luck!

Canvas is a flexible surface, so your modelling paste should be one that can also flex to some extent, otherwise heavy applications may crack off. It's often advised that rigid supports be used (e.g hardboard, mdf etc) for painting this kind of work on.
