How does an amateur just starting out on trying to sell their work, decide how much they should charge for a painting?

Remember it is better to start with realistic prices, and build up according to demand, rather than starting too high, and having paintings not selling. And please, don't begrudge the gallery their commission. - without them your work would not be seen."
