Pam Powell replies: When in doubt about framing, use cream, grey or beige mounts and simple frames, particularly with fine detailed line work. When watercolour is added, a mount in harmony with the predominant colour and tone and a soft-coloured frame can look very attractive. Border widths for mounts can vary a great deal but a 5 cm (2 in) minimum is a good guide, even for small works. Many framers sell off-cuts of mountboard cheaply, so why not experiment with different coloured strips placed around you work in the comfort of your own home? For a 'double mount' two mounts with different sized windows are used together. The inner border left showing around the picture adds greater depth and interest.
