Please can you tell me why water-colours are mounted before framing and oils are not?

Pam Powell replies: "Water-colours are mounted in order to protect the painting by preventing it from coming into contact with the glass and to enhance the overall effect of framing. As oils are usually varnished for protection and not framed with glass, a mount is not necessary.
