I have recently treated myself to a set of the 11 Sable Brushes set. I was a little amazed to find after use and once dried properly that the hairs all splay out and do not keep their pointed shapes. The riggers are fine when wet and point up ok the rounds do not necessarily point up very well. Can anyone tell me is this normal or abnormal - have I got a bogus set or am I worrying unnecessarily. Considering the price and the write up Hazel Soan gives these brushes I was a bit disappointed.

Hi Les, I don't use Kolinsky Sable for my watercolours, and have never used them. However, if you bought them through SAA, you should phone and discuss the problem.

Generally, after use with sables, if you dip the bristles in clean water (it can be warm, but not hot) and lift them out straight, and the bristles should cling together to a smooth point.

If you used the brushes, as I'm sure you would with brushes of this quality, in a careful manner, then I'm as surprised as you, and would also be disappointed.

Have a word with the shop, and lets know how you get on.

Hello Les - I agree with Steve. I have used Kolinsky sable brushes with watercolour for many years. They always keep their point. You should certainly contact the SAA who will, I am sure, either send you a replacement set or issue a refund.

Hi, to those who took the time to respond, I am very grateful. I have hung on and used my brushes. I have found that when wet they maintain their points adequately, it is only when they dry out that they go 'bushy' if not shaped when wet. However, if shaped when still wet they remain that way. I suppose I am not used to having such good brushes. Again thank you.
