Can anyone help, I have been given a complete art set and I am no good, so scared to use it and what i did try is awful like a baby would do. Please any help on how to start, I have joined a small art group put this is finishing for the summer.
Would love to be good at something!
Thank You.

Tilly this does depend a bit on what your art set is and what you want to achieve. The best advice for someone starting out is to keep it very simple. You may want to paint a large landscape or a detailed still life, but try something very simple to start with. Painting really involves two things, what to paint and how to paint it. So decide on what, it could be a pepper pot on the kitchen table and start with just a pencil or one colour on a brush. measure the height and width, make these marks on your paper and try again and again, looking to see where it is wrong and do this until you are happy with the result, it is really no different to playing music or riding a bike, you have to practice and practice.

Have a look at some of our DVDs on the web and good luck.
Remeber keep it simple.
John

Hello Tilly!
Where about are you? Can we help with finding you a suitable art group not too far away?

Hello again, Tilly! I see that there are 2 art clubs around Aberdeen (Upper Deeside Art Society and Broadsea Art Club) but I don't know if you are further north than this.
Click on Tuition, then Tuition Listings, Tuition by Artists or Search by Map.
Best wishes and Good Luck!

Hi Tilly,

What sort of an art set have you been given? I do pastels mostly, but some oil, acrylic and watercolour, and my subject are mostly land/seascapes.

Best wishes.
Marcia

Hi marcia
It is a complete set of everything. I cannot get Sky and sea right, I live right by the sea and the sky can be amazing and i want to paint it, but it always looks a mess. I have managed to do some trees and roses but that s as far as i have got. started with water colour but found it to hard so went to acryilics.

Hi Tilly,

I love doing skies and water and mostly use pastel as it is instant colour, but I still like oil as it is lovely to use paint too ! I have also done some acrylic and watercolour (watercolour being the most difficult for me - but I am trying to have a go when I can!).

This is a link to my website:-

If there is anything I can help you with please let me know. My email is marciarowles@msn.com and would look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes
Marcia
