I specialise in painting with 'Artisan' water mixable oils and have written a book on the subject. Traditional linseed oil will mix with 'Artisan' however once you do this the paint can then only be thinned and cleaned up with the normal turpentine or white spirit, to maintain the advantage of thinning and cleaning up with water the mediums that Winsor and Newton produce especially for Artisan will need to be used ie Linseed Oil, Safflower Oil which is better for thinning pale colours, Painting medium and Thinner. The main advantage of 'Artisan' is the fact that you don't need to use noxious spirits allowing them to be used in public places without causing offence which is perfect if you want to take them to your local art group or indeed on painting holidays which is great for me as I lead oil painting holidays for HF Holidays something that was very difficult in the past.
