I recently started painting with gouache and also acrylics. Is varnishing advisable? I have heard many conflicting reports about this.

Ray Campbell Smith replies: I wouldn't varnish gouache as a general rule but acrylics, if used in the manner of oils, often look better for a coat of acrylic matt varnish or acrylic gloss varnish, according to taste.
