Alan Hello everyone, I am a new comer to this site.
I had no idea that such a site existed.
May I take this opportunity to wish every one a Happy New Year.
My question: I have 10 oil on canvas pictures,is it essential that I varnish the pictures, to protect them and hopefully lift the colours.
I like the pictures, and do not want to damage them.
Thanks
Alan

Tracey Hi Alan, I use oils and after a good length of drying, depending on the thickness of paint, I use a spray varnish. You can get them in various finishes, satin, gloss and matte so whichever finish you like....Although you do really need to do this outdoors as the varnish does pong and makes you cough if you are not careful with it.

I think varnish does bring up the colours and makes them 'pop' and does protect the paint from most dirt...

Happy varnishing.
regards
Tracey
