Fiona I was intrigued to see Gum Arabic and Iridescent Medium in the SAA catalogue and would like to know more about the effects of these mediums/results to be expected and how to use them.

Thanks for any help.

Thank you for your query - watercolour mediums are fairly new and they will give a new dimension to your watercolour painting. We all know that you don't need the mediums to create a great watercolour painting but it's always fun to experiment and this is what mediums are for!

The Gum Arabic medium is a colourless solution that increases gloss and transparency of the watercolour paint. You can mix it in with the colour or is useful for lifting out techniques. If a Gum Arabic mixture is washed over a dry base colour it can be lifted out and the under lying colour shows through. One word of caution is never to use it on its own as it does crack.

The Iridescent medium can be mixed with a watercolour paint to give it a pearlescent or shimmery effect - used on its own is has a pinkish pearlescent tinge.

I hope this answers your query - if you would like any further information about any of our products please do not hesitate to call our office on 01949 844050 or the freephone number 0800 9801123.
