Help others to enjoy painting!

With the SAA Bursary you can help more people discover that painting is much more than an enjoyable pastime, it can help them relax, make new friends, build their self confidence and give them a sense of achievement.

The bursary can be used in any way that helps people get the most from their art, whether through local art groups, schools, hospitals, hospices or retirement homes or any other group that already exists or is formed for the purpose. One main winner will receive £500 worth of art materials to enable them to teach and inspire others to paint, and further funds will be allocated to runners up.

Anyone can apply and you don’t need previous teaching experience, you just have to show you can fill others with enthusiasm, inspiration and to help them learn to paint.

The winner will receive SAA Gold Membership for one year which will entitle them to third party civil liability under the SAA’s insurance policy. They will also be asked to report back to the SAA about their project during the year to keep us up to date with all of the inspiring and valuable work they are doing.

The SAA Bursary is only open to SAA members, if you are not already a member, please call us on 0800 980 1123 and ask for membership details.

2010 Bursary Update

The SAA Bursary Scheme celebrated its 5th birthday this year and Peggy Randall, Chairman of the Thurrock Society for Artists with Disabilities, was announced as the deserving winner of £500 worth of art materials at the 'It's all about Art' event in Islington, London.

The Thurrock Society for Artists works to offer members with a wide range of disabilities the opportunity to learn to paint and meet others who enjoy art, in a safe, friendly and inspiring environment. There are 25 regular members, who are treated to demonstrations and given help with their work by a group of dedicated volunteers. “There is a great deal of laughter and that’s the greatest therapy of all,” Peggy said.

The £500 bursary will ensure Peggy can replenish the group’s art supplies and acquire new materials for members to experiment with. “The equipment not only saves members the cost of buying their own materials, but also saves them the effort of having to carry large bags of equipment to and from the meetings,” she explained.

Peggy’s caring and selfless work over the years encapsulates what we stand for at the SAA. She understands the importance of art as therapy for all of us, but has worked to ensure that her students with disabilities have as much access to it as everyone else. “Remember if you can hold a brush or a pencil it’s your abilities, not your disabilities, that count,” she said.

As well as this year’s bursary winner, there were so many inspiring entries that we also awarded two runner-up prizes of £250 worth of art materials, to Jackie Ward and Sandra Trott, as well as seven highly commended prizes of £25 worth of art materials.
