One of the reasons for the continuing popularity of the Impressionists is their sheer painterliness: just looking at a Renoir or a Monet is guaranteed to get those brush fingers itching!
In this remarkably informative and instructional book, Noel Gregory re-creates five classic Renoirs - Lady With Parasol, Portrait of Jeanne Samary, After the Bath, Mediterranean Fruits, and The Seine at Chatou - providing a study predominantly in blues, portraiture, figure work, still life and landscape. The whole gamut of art, in fact. Re-creations often fail to work because copying seems to induce stiffness, but there's looseness and flow to these demonstrations (with their associated tracings) that perfectly capture the spirit of the originals. If you want to paint in the same manner as the Impressionists, as opposed to just copy their work, this rather good little book should put you in the right frame of mind.
