Tuition

I believe that misunderstanding a key concept ?frequently prevents an aspiring artist from ?developing their skills beyond a certain level or may indeed cause them to abandon their creative hopes in frustration. I am known for my clear,jargon-free presentation style and for getting comprehension and technique across in a friendly, supportive, non-patronising & lively manner. As for my qualifications, I hold a First-class Honours BA & a Masters degree, both in Fine Art painting, plus a Post- Graduate Certificate in Education (for Post-compulsory Education & Training).

I conduct workshops, courses, demonstrations and presentations in various mediums (such as watercolour, watersoluble pencil & mixed media) and on a wide range of subjects including Colour Mixing, Perspective, Tone, Sketching, Drawing skills and such like. All are ?designed to help students gain a grounding of the principles and skills ?underlying the techniques used, understanding not just the 'how' but also the 'why' of a technique. Sessions can be tailored and run at your location (one-on-one private tuition sessions are also available) so please contact me to discuss your requirements. I also run several regular weekly classes between September and Easter in various locations around York.

Biography

I thoroughly enjoy encouraging others to create and I tutor various art workshops and courses for beginner to experienced as well as private tuition sessions for individuals. Besides running various workshops, creative breaks and independent classes I also teach several regular weekly adult classes around the York area from September to Easter. I also give illustrated talks to art (& non-art) groups on various topics including creativity and innovation, art appreciation and different art techniques. (Contact me for availability and rates.)
I have sketched, drawn and painted throughout my life and since the age of 40 have undertaken numerous art courses achieving a Distinction on the Foundation Course in Art & Design plus a First Class Honours BA and an MA, - both in Fine Art(Painting). I also hold a PGCE for Post-Compulsory Education & Training (PCET) and am a member of the Institute for Learning. My work has been commissioned and exhibited widely and is held in private collections from Philadelphia to New Zealand.
Although versed in most mediums I am usually found teaching watercolour and drawing techniques.  However, after seeing the David Hockney exhibition this year I bought an iPad two days later and have been totally bowled over by its possibilities. Indeed, on a five day Impressionist tour this autumn I used the iPad as my principle sketch book as it works great in galleries without any 'mess'.  I have now started teaching sketching with the iPad (on a one-to-one basis) utilising the fabulous ProCreate app. See examples on my new gallery page.
