Rebecca runs short introductory courses on the traditional technique of egg tempera painting, as used in the early Renaissance and in the Orthodox Church today for painting Icons.
Egg tempera is made of pigments mixed with egg yolk and water and is a strong, durable paint for use on plaster (gesso), paper or card. Students learn about the various properties of pigments, how to make and apply the paint, and some basic gilding. For each course, gesso panels and most materials will be provided. It is intended that by the end of each course students will have completed a small painted panel. Each course is suitable both for beginners and those with some painting experience
Rebecca Merry is a painter who trained at the Royal College of Art and now works mainly in egg tempera. She is a member of the Society of Tempera Painters and in 2004 worked with Rolf Harris on the BBC 1 programme ‘Rolf on Art’ on his recreation of ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli
