Biography

At school, a very long time ago, I excelled at art, I had a wonderful teacher who was colour blind but taught us to draw and observe. I followed school with a year at Lincoln College of Art doing a foundation course to go into graphic design. I never did, but I had the chance to try out different mediums. After leaving college art took a back seat for a few years until I walked into a bookshop and picked up "The Magic of Watercolour" by James Fletcher-Watson. This introduced me into the art of watercolour, it showed me the potential of the medium and it changed my life. I spent the next twenty years learning to paint in watercolour, studying the old masters and finding my own way and a style which suited me.

Today I paint in a very traditional way, en plein air when I can, shunning any 'gimmicks' prefering to just use pencil, brush, lovely artists watercolours and quality papers.

My influences are Turner and the old masters, especially De Wint who mastered tone in watercolour. James Fletcher-Watson, who I had the pleasure of meeting, Ted Wesson, Edward Seago, Roland Hilder and David Bellamy for his energy and enthusiasm and wonderful pictures of the wilder side of our game.

I love to paint the light and atmosphere on this wonderful British landscape and to pass on my enthusiam and knowledge to student painters and see them succeed.

I am always glad to take on commisions and through Heritage Watercolour I actively promote myself as a painter of fine country houses.
