Biography
Marisa Rehana Mann: My Work as an Artist

My work as an artist has evolved from an interesting childhood brought up in different countries where my parents were employed. I love to paint scenes of a natural type showing how the people and animals live in different areas. When I was at college I also studied the economic, historic and social backgrounds of both this country and others. I have studied working in watercolours, acrylics and oil paints and also enjoyed working in clay and making large oriental wall hangings. A long term plan is to develop both my interests in art and conservation and to portray this visually.
My practise at present is largely in my studio where I am concentrating on wildlife, portraits in oil, magazine covers for an Asian cultural magazine and paintings from an area in the Pyrenees that interests me greatly. The Mughal style of art is used as a basis for the magazine covers, and I am studying this to gain an understanding of the use of perspective in Mughal and Oriental art. I have also looked at the Italian artist, Piranesi, who uses up to eight different view points to cover a scene. Part of my childhood was spent in Africa, where I visited traditional villages making many interesting forms of African art. I travelled around Europe and Asia as a teenager, and am now interested in the art of many countries.
In January I was awarded a place to train for a new qualification; Artist in Residence”, run through Morley College, London, to provide a means for interested groups to acquire an artist proficient in organising and conducting art residencies. My first practise one was with a French Gallery and Society, Couleur décor, http://www.couleur-décor.org, painting in the style of Cezanne and the Fauves.
Whales and Dolphins have always interested me since as a child we were evacuated from the Biafran War on a banana boat bound from Nigeria to Liverpool and I was filled with a sense of wonder at the creatures who kept our ship company. It has been very rewarding to do my second practise residency with WDCS, www.wdcs.org in the Moray Firth .Here working amongst the dedicated staff; I have produced a large painting of the possible cetaceans to be found living and visiting. On my return I shall use this work for an Asian magazine cover to show the endangered river dolphins and create more paintings of cetaceans for my web site www.artandparcel.com .
The exhibition will also display some of my Amazon parrot paintings, one of which is attached, and after returning to France for a project and painting donkeys and the Canigou mountain, [Catalan national symbols], I plan, with an article in Parrot Magazine to offer to be an artist in residence for parrot owners, zoos and collectors, to paint their birds back in their original environment. Exhibitions
Recently I have exhibited at Morley College Gallery , London, as part of my award. Also my paintings are with a gallery and society in France, where we also exhibit in the town square.
Teachings
While chairing the South West London Art group , I helped with workshops on various subjects, and now I give workshops/residencies in the Pyrenees. This has been in French so far, but there could be accomadation locally if anyone wanted a far flung venue-As part of my residency in Speyside with WDCS , I tried to also spread the message of conserving whales and dolphins, while painting with them as part of the requirements for my awarded course and now , if viewers see their site, our government has plans to destroy the habitat of the models in my paintig of them,so do sign their petition; its online.
Some years ago, I did a degree in Econ.[govt] L.S.E. so I can , with the help of the Residency course, hopefully prduce a rather unusual teaching style.
I shall be teaching in France again next year.
Awards
I was awarded the course "Artist in Residence" a City and Guilds course run by Deborah Bird at e info@artqualifications.co.uk I would highly recomend the course, and I had a wonderful time doing it, especially when WDCS kindly let me be their Resident artist up in Speyside ,the Moray Firth.
