Biography

Art was the only thing I was ever any good at at school. However, I chose not to go to art college after A levels and spent a few years failing to become a rock and roll star. Eventually, I went on to study performing arts at Dartington Hall in the mid 1970s and then qualified as a teacher.

I returned seriously to art in the late 1990s after a varied career path (including musician, community artist, actor, arts administrator and consultant, sign maker and, finally, professional magician since 1989!). I started with adult evening classes and then a part time Foundation Course at Stafford College. I stayed on to do a two year Fine Art HND (Distinction) and was then asked to be the college's resident Fine Art practitioner and, later, a sessional tutor.

After 3 years on the lovely Fylde coast between Preston and Blackpool from 2007 to 2010 while my wife returned to university in Preston to study ceramics full time, we moved to a small cottage on the outskirts of Bungay on the Norfolk/Suffolk border in the beautiful Waveney Valley where we plan to establish our own studios. Here we are getting involved with local and regional art activities and, although I still work as an entertainer from time to time, I'm concentrating on my work as an artist - exhibiting where possible and generally trying to promote and sell my work. I have set up some regular workshops here in Bungay and regularly do demonstrations and talks to art groups in the region.

I am a Signature member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society and am the editor of the Society's quarterly magazine "Talking Point". I have demonstrated and run workshops at The Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick and my coloured pencil painting of Ashness Bridge in Cumbria features on the new packaging for the Derwent Artist coloured pencil range. Throughout 2012 have had a series of articles on coloured pencil techniques in the SAA "Paint" magazine.

I paint in oils and, in addition to studio painting, love to work "plein air" in the landscape. I offer tuition in simple techniques for anyone who would like to work outdoors but lacks the confidence to try.

I have always drawn - in fact, observational drawing is the bedrock of everything I do. I am really pleased to have recently recorded my first DVD set for SAA/Teaching Art - "Yes You Can Draw" - a course in observational drawing aimed at beginners, improvers and anyone who feels (or has ever been told) that they can't draw! I genuinely believe that anyone can learn to draw if they are given the right direction and follow some simple rules. The DVD set is now listed in the SAA catalogue and online - just search for the title or my name.
