Biography

How did you become an Artist?
I graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 1998.

Where are you based?
I am based primarily in the West Midlands. I run an Art Shop and Framing business in the centre of Birmingham, and I use public transport to commute to work four days a week. Because I am the boss this allows for us to continuously cruise the waterways and move between several counties.

How has your work changed, if at all, since moving on to the canal boat?
Since graduating Uni in 1998 I have mostly painted landscapes and seascapes. Most of these were based on holiday trips to Cornwall and the Peak District as we lived in the Birmingham suburbs. Moving onto the canals was really my first extended experience of rural living and of being immersed (pardon the pun) in the canal landscape. I no longer have to wait until I am on holiday for scenic views, I just look out of my porthole. I have also found a new appreciation for the urban landscapes of the waterways, both in their post industry decay, and for the places that are hidden gems of green in the urban setting.

What inspires you?
Apart from the obvious answer of 'canals' it is really the tranquility and solitude you can find when out on the towpath. You can be on the outskirts of a large town, but feel completely alone with just the colours of the sky and the reflections in the water. This is something I try to convey in my images. The other thing is almost the opposite in beauty, but the same in feeling, and that is the old factories and wharves and the history of the canals which were after all an industrial creation. It's a bit like two sides to the same thing.

Do you think you will permanently stay on the canal boat now?
I can't imagine moving back to dry land anymore. I can no longer connect with the idea of living in a house: of not being able to move, and of always having the same view outside of my window. Even in a Marina or on a permanent mooring there is the option to up sticks whenever you want, even if it is just for the weekend, with the benefit of not having to pack. You just take your home with you. I have also had studios in Birmingham, but I think now I have the best studio possible as it moves with me, towed behind the boat we live on and it puts me totally in the landscape I want to paint or photograph.
