Biography
Born to a family of professional painters, naturally started painting at a young age, winning my first Art award at 9 years old.
On leaving school I studied at Hastings Art college, followed by a variety of art related work including portrait commissions, illustration, decorative sign and mural painting.
My love of sculpture started after attending pottery evening classes in 1986, from there I sought out Masters to teach me the techniques of woodcarving and stonecarving. I was one of only seven students chosen to attend The Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture, under the patronage of Dame Elisabeth Frink (1988-91). This small school specialised in the traditional methods of figurative sculpture.
After taking time out to raise my three daughters I took up gardening as another form of creativity, now I design and make award winning speciality gardens, to feature my sculpture.
I have specialised in portraits for 25 years, drawing, painting and 3D. Between commissions, I create figurative sculpture and reliefs with themes based on Myth and Movement, using all mediums, both modelling and carving.
I started teaching two years ago because I believe everyone is an artist, they just need a little guidance to believe in their own abilities. My oldest student has just begun painting at 102 years old, which just goes to show ...your never too old to learn!
As a natural progression to teaching, I hold talks and demonstrations for Art Groups and other societies. Recently I have started writing and illustrating teaching articles for The Leisure Painter magazine, to be published from January 08...on Portraits.
