Biography

Janice Lightowler BA(Hons), USWA, ASU After graduating from the University of Ulster in Belfast with B.A.(Hons) in 1990, she formed her business, Bluebelle Landscapes, at her home in Moira, Co. Down. Her enthusiasm for art developed on holiday when she was eleven years old. Janice took ill with Chickenpox and being housebound, her father bought artist materials to help pass the time. This was when Janice's talent began to emerge. Janice creates stunningly naturalistic images of the world around her. Each painting is characterised by radiant luminosity combined with a deep richness of colour and intense observation. Janice's technical accomplishment and skilful handling of oil paint give a reverence to her everyday subject matter. Fishing trawlers, wild flowers, muddy lanes or cows in a field are all rendered with extraordinary accuracy, offering an intense appreciation of these ordinary things. Janice has sold her work in local galleries, the RDS in Dublin and Mall Galleries in London. Janice is a member of the Arts Society of Ulster (ASU) and Ulster Society of Women Artists (USWA) and her work is part of the Ulster Television Art Collection. She has also exibited with the Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy, in Dublin. As well as working on her own compositions, Janice also accepts commissions and provides tuition.

During the 2007 USWA 50th anniversary exhibition at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast, Janice's work was voted the Most Popular Work by the public and she was awarded the Max MacCabe Trophy (known as the Visitors' Choice Trophy).

At the 2008 USWA 51st exhibition the the Founders Awarded? was presented to Janice and she also won the Visitors' Choice Trophy for the second time.

Also in 2008 she won 1st prize in the H.R Brown Art Award from the Rose Society of Northern Ireland. It was the first time in the history of the exhibition that a painting of Rose Hips had won the competition.

At the 2009 USWA 52nd exhibition Janice won an award from Winsor and Newton for her painting ˜Reflections of Ardglass'. Janice's main mediums are oil on canvas and pencil drawing, which portray her meticulous approach to detail that is a hallmark of Bluebelle Landscapes.

In 2010 Janice was awarded the letters ASU from the Arts Society of Ulster. She also had work selected by the Royal Ulster Academy for their annual exhibition. At the USWA 53rd Annual Exhibition she was Highly Commended by the Selectors.

In 2011 Janice had a painting selected by the Royal Ulster Academy again for their annual exhibition in the Ulster Museum. The large painting was of St Goerge's Market, Belfast.

In 2012 Janice again won The Founders Award and the Max MacCabe Trophy at the USWA Annual Exhibition.

The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin accepted one of Janice's paintings for their annual exhibition 2013, she won The De Veres Art Award for a Work of Distinction and the painting sold.
