BACKGROUND AND APPROACH TO PAINTING AND TEACHING
I have painted in traditional representational, symbolic, semi-abstract and abstract ways. This is because my early discipline was in general illustration, with a particular interest in the human form both clothed and nude, and so I have studied anatomy and fairly rigorous drawing on a wide range of subjects.
Over the years I have evolved approaches to teaching colour and composition which benefit students whatever medium they use to paint and draw or design in. And of course, I have learned a tremendous amount about colour and composition by teaching it! I feel colour is incredibly exciting with enormous emotional power, particularly when combining it with tonal variation to create subtle or dramatic lighting and inner luminosity to make a painting glow with an inner light.
Composition is merely the way elements of a painting are put together, along with how we respond when looking at a picture. You cannot separate these two aspects. It is interesting to analyse what we see and the attitudes we bring with us to looking at paintings. In my courses I also aim to enable students to deepen their understanding of composition and develop their ability to create interesting, creative and meaningful compositions for their own work.

One-to-one Drawing and painting tuition is offered at times to suit you, daytime, evening and weekends. You can choose what you want to do, and learn at your own pace. For the time you have booked with me, you will have my undivided attention, so you can progress more quickly than being in a class.

Based on the belief that anyone can learn to draw and paint, we do step by step exercises in the basics of drawing and colour mixing to help you develop skills and confidence in the ABC of drawing and painting. There will be opportunities to explore a range of media including watercolour, acrylics, oils, pastel, charcoal and ink, and to experience working from observation and imagination. Do you have basic skills in drawing and colour mixing? Would you like to develop your creativity, explore ideas and media of interest to you and develop your own personal style with likeminded people?
In this class with a maximum of 10 students, you will be encouraged to experiment creatively with a wide range of media, approaches and ideas and to develop your own, personal interests and style.
Central to these classes is the sharing that goes on between the students, who are producing work varying from precise miniatures to large expressive, painterly pieces! We also visit galleries as and when the group feels like it in order to experience work 'in the flesh', which is much more inspiring than looking at reproductions. If you cannot commit to regular art sessions, but would like to be doing some art, then private sessions may be the answer, as they can be arranged at odd, irregular times to suit you.
I am a very experienced teacher, and can also give you plenty of homework to be getting on with between sessions!
