Biography

APPROACH TO TEACHING
I have been a professional artist and qualified art teacher for 28 years, working with adults and young people in colleges, schools, in the community and privately. I believe everyone is creative, and that if you can pick up a brush, you can learn to draw and paint! I am endlessly patient, and aim to help beginners quickly develop skills and confidence in the basics of drawing and painting through step by step tuition, demonstrations, sharing, talks, and lots of hands on exercises and projects.

More experienced students are encouraged to explore ideas and themes of personal interest and to experiment creatively with a wide range of media and techniques. There is no 'house style', as each student's unique creativity is encouraged, rather than a blind copying. Plus there is an endless supply of organic refreshments to inspire and energise you!

A big plus of studying with me is that you are guaranteed loads of personalised, individual attention in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This is because the maximum size of a group is only four students, or one-to-one! This makes things very flexible, and means you can progress at your own pace.

I have a wide knowledge not only about different media, but also in different approaches to drawing and painting: I have painted in traditional representational, symbolic, semi-abstract and abstract ways because my early discipline was in general illustration, with a particular interest in the human form both clothed and nude, and so I have studied anatomy and fairly rigorous drawing on a wide range of subjects.

I feel colour is incredibly exciting with enormous emotional power, particularly when combining it with tonal variation to create subtle or dramatic lighting and inner luminosity to make a painting glow with an inner light.

In my courses I also aim to enable students to deepen their understanding of composition and develop their ability to create interesting, creative and meaningful compositions for their own work. Composition is merely the way elements of a painting are put together, along with how we respond when looking at a picture. You cannot separate these two aspects. It is interesting to analyse what we see and the attitudes we bring with us to looking at paintings.

Since completing my Masters Degree in Fine Art (when I gained a Distinction) and also training as an Art Teacher, I now work and teach using all media, including pencil, pastel, oils, acrylics, watercolours, watercolour pencil, collage, mixed media, digital photography, photoshop and digital film.
