The Artist's Biography and statement
Biography
I was born and grew up on the Mediterranean island of Malta and began painting as a child. I completed my first oil painting and won a competition but this was a short career in art as, according to the culture and upbringing in my native country, it was customary to follow a career in the military, in ship repair, or follow your father's trade. Back in the 1960s, an artistic career was viewed with scepticism and associated with poverty. The strength of this view was summed up by my uncle, who told me “Good artist is an unemployed artist”. This childhood memory has remained with me ever since, but it did not deter me from trying to realise my own artistic ambitions in adulthood.
Thirty years later and after lots of living and mini-adventures, including a successful career in logistics management, I chose to leave my comfortable career path and launch out in a new direction. It took help and encouragement from friends, relatives, and more courage than I first envisaged. Some years have passed since I made this decision and the sceptics have grown fewer, while the number of admirers has grown larger. For that I say, Thank you Lord for I am now doing what I have always wanted to do and I am happy with the life choice I have made, and have been a professional artist for the past five years.
