Biography

Carole Bury is a Professional Artist working with Paper Textiles and Drawings which explore themes of geology, fossils and woodlands.

"I studied Fine Art Textiles at Manchester Polytechnic, graduating in 1981. Since that time I have exhibited regularly.
For many years I was a member and enjoyed exhibiting with the 62 Group of Textile Artists. For a few years I lived and worked at the National Arts School in Papua New Guinea.

I now live in a very small village in the Cotswolds and love roaming the woodlands and fields, discovering new walks and vistas that fuel my drawings.

My drawings and textile works also reflect my love and fascination with fossils and geology; and the colourful charts and maps that represent them.

The textile works are made of tissue paper. White Tissue Paper is coloured with oil paint, which is permanent and light fast.

The single sheets of transparent tissue paper are cut and pieced together to form Seam Lines and Fault Lines inspired by strata found in Core Samples and from Geological Charts and maps. The colours in Geological Charts are usually quite bizarre and wonderful. They contain patterns and marks that are unique to these documents. The overlapping edges create new colours and tones.

Delicate mono-prints of ferns, paper cut-outs and fine pen and ink drawings can be detected within the fragile materials of the fossil beds. A Depth of Field is achieved by printing in front of, and behind the transparent layers.
A close examination and inspection may reveal some fossil fish waiting to be discovered.

Assembling these pieces is a lengthy process as the hand stitching is completely functional. The added dimension of the stitching adds variety to these strangely glowing pieces. The colours are carefully chosen to enhance the strata and bedrock.

Creating the work carries a history, which, as in its origins of Nature – is able to entice, illuminate and preserve."
